Description

The chiminea’s origins go back at least to the 16th or 17th century, when chefs in small Mexican villages used them as elevated cooking vessels and families gathered near them for warmth. Traditionally, a chiminea is made of volcanic clay and designed in a wide-bottom vase form, with a narrow, vertical chimney through which to direct smoke and a wide mouth on its side for the fire pit. The chiminea’s design allows it to be used in the rain without the water extinguishing its flame.

CARING FOR YOUR CHIMINEA – CURING INSTRUCTIONS

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS MOST IMPORTANT AND MUST BE FOLLOWED

Before using your new Chiminea you will first need to cure the inside. To ensure a long life for your Chiminea it is important that you follow these instructions. Not following these instructions could result in cracking to any part of your new Chiminea.

Firstly, SET YOUR CHIMINEA IN ITS STAND ON NON-FLAMABLE GROUND. Do not set directly on the ground, as it is necessary for the air to flow underneath. INSERT dry river sand (± 8cm deep) in the bottom of the fire pot. This gives a good insulating layer.

HOW TO CURE YOUR NEW CHIMINEA
1. Start slowly with a small fire of a few twigs as kindling and then a very small log. Allow this fire to burn out completely and let your Chiminea cool for at least an hour.
2. DO NOT EVER USE COAL, ANTRICITE OR CHARCOAL.
3. Build your next fire the same way using small twigs, box wood as Kindling, and again let it burn out and leave your Chiminea to cool off completely.
4. Your third fire should be the same as the second, but add 2 small logs and again let it burn out and let the Chiminea cool down.
5. After 3 or 4 small fires you can build a normal sized fire.

The Curing process allows soot and resin to build up on the inside of your Chiminea. This process will seal any hairline cracks and open pores in the clay and will prolong the life of the Chiminea.

Be warned – excessive heat will crack your Chiminea, flames must not protrude higher than 150 mm from the top of the outlet.
PLEASE NOTE
• Let the fires go out on their own. DO NOT PUT OUT WITH WATER, as extreme changes in temperature will crack it. Do not light a wet or damp Chiminea.
• The Chiminea is designed for outdoor use only unless an indoor chimney outlet has been installed.
• The Importer/Distributor takes no responsibility for cracked Chiminea’s …………………………Gracias
